Willimantic, CT (04/20/2022) — The Theatre Program at Eastern Connecticut State University will present a live performance of dance, film and poetry in its final main stage production of the spring semester on April 28-May 1 in the Proscenium Theatre in the Fine Arts Instructional Center. "The Greenwood Project: Against Erasure" is a multi-disciplinary collaboration directed by Theatre Professor Alycia Bright Holland, who teaches dance and choreography, and Theatre Professor Brian Day, who teaches filmmaking.
Show times:
- April 28 & 29 at 7:30 p.m.
- April 29 at 11 a.m.
- April 30 & May 1 at 4 p.m.
Set in the north Tulsa, OK, neighborhood of Greenwood, the production highlights achievements of African Americans between 1907-21. The show will also commemorate the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, and the loss of life and cultural capital that resulted from the tragic event.
A true collaboration across art forms, "The Greenwood Project" features students in Eastern's Dance and World Performance concentration as well as the expertise of several faculty members. The performance includes original choreography by Bright Holland, filmmaking by Day, poetry by English Professor Daniel Donaghy and musical composition by Music Professor Jeffrey Calissi. The production will feature film and live performances by Eastern seniors, who will present original choreography in collaboration with student poets and filmmakers.
Words of survivors will be used throughout the performance to remember this part of United States history. "There can be no equity or social justice with respect to such historical trauma without acknowledgement and restoration of such events to the living memory of America," said Bright-Holland.
