For a relatively small campus of 4,400 students, the “Warriors” of Eastern Connecticut State University do a lot. They conduct high-quality research and present in conferences across the country. They perform in stunning theatrical productions and produce award-winning artwork. They compete on championship athletic teams and participate in more than 90 clubs. Students delve 'beyond the research' at NCUR

From artificial intelligence (AI) on Mars to the impacts of cult brainwashing on parenting, nine Eastern students showcased their work at the 2025 National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), held April 7-9 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA. NCUR is an annual conference with the mission of promoting undergraduate research from nationwide institutions and diverse fields of study. The conference featured mentor-led sessions, student poster and oral presentations, and a "Future Fair" showcasing undergraduate research.

Eastern students "make history" at statewide conference

History students at Eastern Connecticut State University and visiting students from other Connecticut State Universities (CSUs) presented their topical research at the CSU Making History Conference on March 28 in the Student Center. The event was sponsored by Eastern's Department of History, Center for Connecticut Studies, School of Arts and Sciences, and Provost's Office.

Twelve students from Eastern Connecticut State University's Department of English showcased their literary research at the Connecticut State University (CSU) Undergraduate English Conference on Nov. 1. The event was held at Central Connecticut State University and allowed undergraduates to share their scholarly and creative projects, developed under the mentorship of faculty members Allison Speicher, Susan DeRosa and Ken McNeil.

Psychology department represents at October conferences

Eastern's Department of Psychological Science represented at two academic conferences this past October. At the annual meeting of the Berkshire Association of Behavior Analysis and Therapy (BABAT) in Worcester, MA, Professor James Diller presented a poster with a student co-author. At the New England Psychological Association (NEPA) conference at Springfield College, students presented on college-student well-being and BIPOC peer mentoring.

Eastern Connecticut State University sent students from a broad range of disciplines to present at this year's Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) Northeast Regional Conference on Oct. 25 and 26 at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, MA. Fifteen students from nine academic departments represented Eastern at the conference.

Two honors English students at Eastern Connecticut State University recently had their work published in academic journals. Recent alumna Kai-li Davey '23 was featured in the January 2024 Sigma Tau Delta creative writing journal "Rectangle," and Marcus Grant '24 was featured in the fall 2023 issue of the scholarly journal "Metamorphosis."

2 students travel to Puerto Rico to present AI research

Two students at Eastern Connecticut State University who are native Spanish speakers recently presented artificial intelligence research while in a setting reminding them of home. Katherine Escalante and Christian Deras-Rodriguez presented at the Hispanic Educational Technology Services (HETS) conference from Jan. 10-13 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

From burnout to masculine honor, six student projects were recognized at the recent Psychological Science Research Event on Dec. 4. Timothy Jacques, Kaylee Drobish, Victoria Janosi, Kylie Rataic, Stacie Kinlen and Samantha Shatas won "best poster" awards at the event.

Eastern students present in Wisconsin at National Conference on Undergraduate Research

Eastern Connecticut State University sent 10 students to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on April 13 to present their research findings at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), the nation's largest undergraduate research conference. Eastern students presented work in a variety of fields, from research on high-speed rails to pigment mutations of plants.

Four Eastern Connecticut State University biology students presented and won awards for their research at the 77th annual Eastern Colleges Science Conference, the oldest continuous scientific conference for undergraduates in the United States. The conference was held at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT, on April 1.

Eastern students participate in Summer Research Institutes

Eastern hosted three Summer Research Institutes (SRIs) at the conclusion of summer break. Occurring from Aug. 22 - 26, the weeklong institutes engaged 29 students in the fields of English, business/marketing and political science. The SRIs culminated on Aug. 26 with presentations in the Webb Hall auditorium.

Biochem student Djenerly Massena publishes 'chem-informatics' paper

It's uncommon for undergraduate students to publish their research in a scientific journal. But junior biochemistry major Djenerly Massena has done just that, co-authoring a paper with her faculty mentor and lead author, Kedan He, professor of physical sciences. Their paper, "Examining unsupervised ensemble learning using spectroscopy data of organic compounds," appeared online in November in the Journal of Computer-Aided Molecular Design.

Eastern students complete summer research fellowships

Two Eastern students spent their summer's completing research fellowships under close faculty mentorship. In order to receive the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Fellowship, students must carry a 3.0 GPA. In addition to the one-on-one mentorship, students receive a $1,000 stipend and $250 for project expenses.

3 students co-author article on dual language learners

Three Eastern Connecticut State University students have co-authored an article with professor emeritus Jeffrey Trawick-Smith and Julia DeLapp, director of the Center for Early Childhood Education, that was recently published online in a peer-reviewed journal. The article "The Influence of Teachers, Peers and Play Materials on Dual Language Learners' Play Interactions in Preschool" appears in the May 2022 edition of the "Early Childhood Education Journal."

Health Sciences major Nancy Gonzalez '22 presented research at the Northeast Decision Science Institute's (NESDI) 51st annual conference in Newark, NJ, this past April. Representing a four-student team of researchers from Eastern, Gonzalez presented the group's project, "Vaccine Supply Chain (VSC) Systems: An Analysis Using Operations Management Perspective."

Eugene Bertrand receives grant for tobacco documentary project

Eastern Connecticut State University sophomore Eugene Bertrand was awarded an Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Project Grant by Eastern's Provost and Undergraduate Research Council. The grant helped fund Bertrand's history film project titled "Connecticut's Tobacco Industry and Diversity: A History."

Tyler Wright to present at 'Posters on the Hill'

Eastern Connecticut State University accounting major Tyler Wright has been selected to present at the annual "Posters on the Hill" conference. His research, titled "The Effect of Length of Stay and Readmission on Total Charges of Total Knee Arthroplasty and Total Hip Arthroplasty Patients," will be presented at the virtual event, which will take place April 26-27.

Noelle Ciccarelli presents on daughter-parent mate preference

Eastern Connecticut State University psychology student Noelle Ciccarelli presented at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) convention on Feb. 18. Ciccarelli's project was titled "Similarities and Differences in Mate Preferences among Parents and their Daughters," and focused on the ratings that daughters gave when seeking a male mate, compared to their parents' ratings when seeking a mate for their daughters.
