For a relatively small campus of 4,400 students, the “Warriors” of Eastern Connecticut State University do a lot. They conduct high-quality research and present in conferences across the country. They perform in stunning theatrical productions and produce award-winning artwork. They compete on championship athletic teams and participate in more than 90 clubs. They broaden their perspectives through internships, studying abroad, and engaging in the wider community.

Eastern students give local preschoolers a summer 'Jumpstart'

Four Eastern students are spending their summer working with Willimantic children through the early childhood program known as "Jumpstart." Through the Center for Community Engagement (CCE), Eastern's Jumpstart students are completing 300 hours each from June through August at the Windham Regional Community Council (WRCC) Early Childhood Program.

Eastern students teach of The Amistad's journey to freedom

Eight students from Eastern Connecticut State University worked with Discovering Amistad this September and October, teaching Hartford-area middle and high school students about the famed revolt of The Amistad. For the "Amistad Journey to Freedom" program, Eastern students told of the ship's historic rebellion and helped to connect it to contemporary social and racial issues.

Students from Eastern Connecticut State University volunteered this spring semester with Windham schoolchildren in the Puentes al Futuro program (Bridges to the Future). This spring's Puentes program involved approximately 40 elementary and middle schoolchildren who participated in a curriculum focused on nutrition and wellness and STEM - science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Student Volunteers Lead 'Puentes al Futuro' Summer Camp

A group of student volunteers at Eastern Connecticut State University led 27 middle schoolers from Windham through the month-long Puentes al Futuro (Bridges to the Future) program this July. A program of the Center for Community Engagement, this summer's camp focused on Lambe Lambe, a South American form of miniature puppet theatre.

Eastern Student Italo Bucca Wins Cesar Chavez Award

Eastern Connecticut State University student Italo Bucca '19 of Hartford was the student recipient of the Cesar Chavez Distinguished Service Award on April 24. Among his involvements on campus, Bucca has volunteered with Eastern's Center of Community Engagement, study abroad office, the nonprofit organization Big Brother, Big Sister and Windham Middle School. Bucca majors in General Studies.

Ten graphic design students at Eastern Connecticut State University recently concluded a major project with the Access Community Action Agency in Willimantic. As part of Professor Terry Lennox's capstone course "Eastern Design Group," the students created 13 posters that graphically represent the agency's 13 community programs.

Eastern Connecticut State University Presents Cesar Chavez Award to Sierra Colon of Wethersfield

Sierra Colon of Wethersfield was recently named as the recipient of Eastern's 2017 Cesar Chavez Distinguished Service Award. The award recognizes individuals who best exemplify the teachings of Chavez, the late labor leader and human rights activist who advocated for fairness, equity and justice for farm workers. The award also recognizes individuals who have performed extraordinary service in support of the Latin American community by developing, contributing to programs/activities focusing on positive development of minority youth and/or minority educational opportunities and advancement.

Valerie Vance '17 Wins Ella T. Grasso Award

Eastern Connecticut State University student Valerie Vance '17 has been named a recipient of the University's 2017 Ella T. Grasso Distinguished Service Award. The award, presented to Vance on March 29, recognizes individuals who work to promote women's rights and gender equality. Awards are given in memory of Ella Grasso, former Connecticut governor and the first woman in America to be elected as governor in her own right.

Eastern Students Volunteer at Day of Giving

Several hundred Willimantic residents converged on Eastern Connecticut State University on Nov. 23 for 10th annual Day of Giving. The event provided a hot holiday meal to people who otherwise may not have been able to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner. Eastern students played a big role in the Day of Giving, serving food, escorting guests and cleaning up after the event.

Eastern Students Participated in Summer Program, “Puentes al Futuro” (Bridges to the Future)

Eastern Connecticut State University concluded its fifth summer youth program for "Puentes al Futuro" (Bridges to the Future) on July 28. Sixty middle school students from Windham were led by 12 Eastern student leaders over the course of the four-week program. The program is coordinated by Eastern's Center for Community Engagement.
