The School of Arts and Sciences at Eastern Connecticut State University recently held the 11th Annual Student Research Conference and Exhibition. The event featured research projects in the form of oral, poster, performance, and art presentations.

Fourteen students majoring in social work at Eastern Connecticut State University were inducted into the national social work honor society, Phi Alpha, on May 12. The society provides a closer bond among students of social work and promotes humanitarian goals and ideals. Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers and invites into membership those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement.

Ten math majors at Eastern Connecticut State University were inducted into the Kappa Mu Epsilon honor society on April 21. The society recognizes students who have a 3.0 GPA, a grade of B or better in each the Abstract Algebra and Real Analysis I courses, at least a B+ average in higher level mathematics courses, and junior or senior class standing.

Fifteen students majoring in business information systems and computer science at Eastern Connecticut State University were inducted into Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the international honor society for computing and information disciplines, on April 21. The society recognizes academic excellence in the computing and information disciplines.

Seven Spanish majors at Eastern Connecticut State University were inducted into the national Spanish honor society, Sigma Delta Pi, on April 28. Qualifications for inductees include three years of college-level Spanish (18 semester credit hours), including at least three semester hours of Hispanic literature or Hispanic culture and civilization at the junior level; a 3.0 GPA in all Spanish courses taken; rank in the upper 35 percent of their class and have completed at least three semesters.

More than 125 students, faculty and other early childhood educators attended Eastern Connecticut State University's Early Childhood Investigations Conference on April 27. The conference theme was "Using Projects to Foster Children's Cognitive Development." Visitors from across the state of Connecticut attended the day-long conference, which was co-hosted by the Center for Early Childhood Education and the Child and Family Development Resource Center.

The ECSU Foundation's competitive scholarship awards are based on merit and, in many cases, unmet financial need. The scholarship process is coordinated by the Office of Institutional Advancement. The following local students were among the approximately 300 Eastern Connecticut State University students to receive ECSU Foundation competitive scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year:

A number of Eastern Connecticut State University students have been participating in Pathways to Leadership, a tiered student leadership program series. The program has been developed based on Eastern's Strategic Planning Initiative to enhance on-campus culture by providing leadership training experiences for students. All Eastern students interested in developing leadership skills are invited to join the Pathways to Leadership program.

Fourteen students from Eastern Connecticut State University were inducted into the TriBeta Honor Society on April 13. The Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) National Biology Honor Society is dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending the boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research.

On April 11, seven Eastern Connecticut State University students were inducted into Eastern's chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national honor society for political science.

Eleven Eastern Connecticut State University students, members of the University's campus chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA), attended the 34th Annual International Collegiate AMA Conference in New Orleans, LA, on March 22-24.

Six Eastern Connecticut State University students who presented posters at the 47th Annual Northeast Geological Society of America Meeting (NGSA) at Hartford's Marriott Hotel in March.

Local Eastern Connecticut State University students participated in an alternative Presidents Day weekend trip to Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center in Greenfield, NH. During the five-day alternative break, Eastern students, led by Brit Cava, the AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer and Event Coordinator in Eastern's Center for Community Engagement, worked alongside Crotched Mountain staff and visited residents with brain injuries.

The purpose of the Drama Society is to help support the operations of the Eastern Theatre Program. This includes, but is not limited to: payments for scripts, royalties, production supplies and equipment; running costs for performances; special projects and events related to theatrical or dramatic activities as determined by the Drama Society executive board.

The purpose of the Pride Alliance club is to promote greater campus awareness of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities and to advocate for a safe campus environment regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Local Eastern Connecticut State University students were recognized at the annual Region I Kennedy Center American Theatre Festival (KCACTF), held at Fitchburg College in Fitchburg, MA, in late January.

The purpose of the Institute of Management Accountants club is to provide its members with accounting expertise, opportunities, and networking experiences outside of the classroom. The club wants to encourage the professional and personal development of an individual by enhancing communication and organizational skills.

The purpose of the Peace and Human Rights Club is to provide a forum for activists and advocates advancing all levels of Peace and Human Rights and to energize and mobilize Eastern Connecticut State University students into informed advocates of Peace and Human Rights. The organization is committed without reservation to non-violence. As a student organization of the Eastern Connecticut State University community, the Student Peace and Human Rights Organization facilitates the advancement of Peace and Human Rights globally through local action.

The purpose of the Dance Team is to provide school spirit and entertainment to the student body, faculty, and staff at Eastern through numerous dance performances.The Dance Team also competes at various local and out-of-state competitions.

RAs at Eastern are carefully selected and trained to help dormitory residents create an environment that is conducive to individual and social growth. Each RA creates recreational, educational and community service programming to involve students in the residence hall community and the community at large. RAs also assist individual students in their social and personal development.

Health and Physical Education/Sports and Leisure Management (HPE/SLM ) majors at Eastern Connecticut State University become more involved in specific areas of study by attending professional conferences, organizing activities and providing opportunities to interact with their peers in their major.
