On Oct. 25, four Eastern Connecticut State University students attended the Family Youth Internet Gambling conference, which was sponsored by the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling (CCPG) at Water's Edge Resort and Spa in Westbrook, CT. Biology students at Eastern Connecticut State University had the opportunity to participate in an intensive 12-day field experience in Costa Rica earlier this summer that focused on various aspects of tropical forest ecology and conservation issues confronting developing countries in the neo-tropics.

Accompanied by Associate Professors of Communication Olugbenga Ayeni and Denise Matthews, the group of 18 students traveled to London and Paris in late May to learn about different platforms of European media and how they compare to American media.

From May 19-29, 12 Eastern students accompanied Art Professor Gail Gelburd on a global field course to Cuba.

Twelve Eastern Connecticut State University students were inducted into the Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society on May 12. The social work major provides students with the knowledge, values, and skills necessary for beginning generalist social work practice. The major combines a liberal arts perspective with professional social work education in the classroom and in field settings throughout Eastern Connecticut.

The Alpha Upsilon Chi Honor Society establishes an intellectual climate by providing instruction for future professionals in the areas of health, physical education, recreation, and sport and dance, and recognizes students for their academic achievement, service and professional involvement in their field. On April 18, 12 Eastern Connecticut State University students were inducted into Alpha Mu Alpha, Eastern's chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national honor society for history. The society promotes the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication, and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians.

Fourteen students majoring in social work at Eastern Connecticut State University were inducted into the national social work honor society, Phi Alpha, on May 12. The society provides a closer bond among students of social work and promotes humanitarian goals and ideals. Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers and invites into membership those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement.

Ten math majors at Eastern Connecticut State University were inducted into the Kappa Mu Epsilon honor society on April 21. The society recognizes students who have a 3.0 GPA, a grade of B or better in each the Abstract Algebra and Real Analysis I courses, at least a B+ average in higher level mathematics courses, and junior or senior class standing.

Fifteen students majoring in business information systems and computer science at Eastern Connecticut State University were inducted into Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the international honor society for computing and information disciplines, on April 21. The society recognizes academic excellence in the computing and information disciplines.

Seven Spanish majors at Eastern Connecticut State University were inducted into the national Spanish honor society, Sigma Delta Pi, on April 28. Qualifications for inductees include three years of college-level Spanish (18 semester credit hours), including at least three semester hours of Hispanic literature or Hispanic culture and civilization at the junior level; a 3.0 GPA in all Spanish courses taken; rank in the upper 35 percent of their class and have completed at least three semesters.
